Early Life

Valencia helped her mother sell drinks outside their local club's stadium in Lago Agrio, then looked for empty bottles for her father to sell at a bottle depot in the capital, Quito. When Valencia was 11 years old, scout Pedro 'Papi' Perlaza saw him play on a dusty pitch near his home and signed him for the local FA sports academy in Sucumbíos.

Early career


Valencia started his career at El Nacional and within a year he was on the fast track to the Sub 20, where he played alongside striker Christian "Chucho" 'Benítez and scored 20 goals in 84 games. Valencia debuted together with El Nacional to his idol Edison Méndez. Valencia joined Spanish club Villarreal in 2005. Gómez grew up in Unlingen, a town in Upper Swabia, and is of German-Spanish descent (his father is Spanish from Granada and his mother is German).
